CHAIRMAN AND FOUNDER
ED FREEDMAN was the Founder and Chairman of Total Merchant Services, founded in 1996 to provide credit card processing for small to mid-size businesses. Under Ed’s entrepreneurial leadership, TMS became a top 10 provider of merchant processing and received numerous awards and industry recognition. His guiding philosophy is centered around practicing integrity to help employees and customers actualize their potential. This, in turn, has become Ed's key to personal success and achievement of his goals. Ed led the company from inception to a highly successful sale in 2017 and is now focusing his efforts on consulting with the acquiring business and on both investment and charitable activities.
Ed recently established Stable Road Capital on Abbot Kinney in Venice, CA to invest in both public and private value creating assets. He has established a Foundation with a vision to impact the health and well-being of individuals and communities around the world. Ed shares his time between Malibu and the mana on Stable Road in Paia, Maui. He enjoys a healthy lifestyle and is an avid kitesurfer, cyclist and yogi.
CHIEF INVESTMENT OFFICER
BRIAN KABOT has over 18 years of principal investing experience on Wall Street. Mr. Kabot began his career at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette as an analyst in their Merchant Banking Partners group. He later worked directly for Dan Lufkin at Questor Management Company where he focused on acquiring distressed and bankrupt companies in the industrials, materials and energy sectors. After 5 years in private equity, he went on to join Reservoir Capital working on their direct public efforts. He later ran the industrials, materials, and energy vertical for Sun Capital Partners’ cross cap structure/ activist hedge fund.
Most recently, Brian was a Founding Partner of Riverloft Capital, a cross cap structure, event-driven hedge fund. In July 2017, he accepted the position of Chief Investment Officer here at Stable Road.
Brian graduated early with a Bachelor of Science in Finance and Accounting from Cornell University’s renowned School of Hotel Administration.
CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER
JAMES NORRIS has spent his career in the investment management industry with experience in hedge funds, family offices, real estate and public accounting. James is a Certified Public Accountant licensed to practice in California, a Chartered Certified Accountant and a fellow member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.
James joined Stable Road Capital in November 2018 as Chief Financial Officer. Prior to joining Stable Road, he was the CFO of another large family office based in Los Angeles. Before moving into the family office space, James was the co-founder and the CFO of Blue Jay Capital Management, LLC, a Los Angeles based, SEC registered investment advisor with peak net assets under management of over $350M. He has also served as the Controller and Chief Compliance Officer of LA-based hedge fund Expo Capital Management, LLC, and was the Controller of Kennedy Wilson Holdings Inc, a NYSE listed global real estate company. He began his career in the UK with PricewaterhouseCoopers before moving to the US in 2008.
James earned a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting & Finance from The University of Glamorgan, UK in 2001.
DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS
PABLO RENDON has worked alongside Ed for the past 6 years as his chief of staff. Prior to joining Ed and Stable Road, he owned and operated businesses in the sports industry. He has over two decades of experience as a pilot and 3 years in the private jet industry. He received his bachelors degree in business management and management information systems from University of Miami. At SRC he organizes all company logistics, systems, and staff.
Before moving to LA with his family, Pablo grew up in South Florida, South America, and spent time in the Middle East. He is an avid waterman and enjoys spending his time away from the office with his family and outdoors.
EMILY MURPHY is the newest member of Stable Road joining in July of 2019. Previously, Emily spent 5 years as a business manager for a lighting design firm in LA. Before that she was the office manager for an architect firm in Boston for 5 years. She received her bachelors from Bridgewater State.
Although she is Boston born and a die-hard Patriots and Red Sox fan, the sunshine of California brought Emily and her husband to the state in 2014. When she is not buried in/banging out the bookkeeping, she is enjoying the sailboat life.
KEN LEONARD is a managing partner and the Co-Head of private credit for Kayne Anderson's middle market credit activities, managing over $3.5B of committed capital. Prior to joining Kayne Anderson, Ken was with Cerberus Capital where he was a Co-Founder of Dymas Capital Management and helped lead the development of a middle market, private equity focused lending business. While at Dymas, he played a leadership role in completing over 130 transactions with underwritten commitments in excess of $4.5 billion.
Prior to joining Cerberus, Ken was a Senior Vice President in the Merchant Banking Syndications Team at GE Capital from 2001 to 2002, where he headed up the syndications effort. From 1998 to 2001 he was in charge of the Corporate Finance Syndications Team of Heller Financial. From 1995 to 1998, he served as an investment professional in the Turnaround Private Equity Group of Heller Investments, Inc. From 1986 to 1995, he served in a variety of lending positions at Heller Financial, including real estate, asset-based lending and cash flow lending.
Ken is a graduate of the University of Iowa and received an M.B.A. from Northwestern University.
KATIE FREEDMAN GOLDSMITH lives in Aspen Colorado. She has been a teacher for 21 years. She taught for 10 years as a 2nd Grade Teacher and Reading Specialist in the Chicago Public Schools. Katie also taught 3rd Grade for the past 11 years at Aspen Country Day School. She recently retired to spend more time with her family and to work as a board member for Stable Road Foundation. She has 3 Master degrees in education, reading, and administration. She is passionate about education and helping underprivileged children. Katie is on the board of the Buddy Program in Aspen Colorado. This program empowers youth through mentoring experiences with their buddies. She and her husband have 3 children. Katie loves the outdoors, hiking, and spending time helping her community.
In Hawaii, the Honu, or green sea turtle has tremendous meaning and is a symbol of longevity, good luck, protection, and a master navigator.
